George Arteaga
Commissioner of Human Resources
City of Chicago

George H. Arteaga was appointed by Mayor Richard M. Daley to lead the Department of Human Resources on November 25, 2009.  As Commissioner, he directs HR policies for the City’s workforce of more than 33,000 and oversees the hiring practices of an agency that receives tens of thousands of job applications annually. 

Mr. Arteaga brings with him twenty-five years of corporate and private-sector human resources experience spanning North America, Europe and Asia.  Most recently, he ran a successful HR consulting firm.  Prior to that, he served as vice president of human resources for CompuSystems, and as human resources director for Burns International Security of Chicago.  He has also worked in the human resources offices of several nationally and internationally known companies. 

He is a recognized subject matter expert who is credited with creating innovative HR polices and practices that have positioned the companies he has worked with to become ‘employers of choice,’ while simultaneously improving productivity and employee moral. 

His areas of expertise include recruitment, training, compensation, employee relations, labor relations, performance reviews, workers compensation, benefits, organizational design and development, and regulatory requirements.

Mr. Arteaga earned a B.A. in Political Science from Loyola University and is fluent in Spanish.

 

Richard Baer
Executive Vice President, General Counsel & Chief Administrative Officer
Qwest Communications

Richard N. Baer serves as General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer of Qwest Communications.  In addition to leading the company’s law department, Rich oversees human resources, corporate communications, risk management and compliance efforts, public policy, federal relations and corporate social responsibility. Rich, who joined Qwest in 2001, previously served as chairman of the litigation department at the Denver law firm of Sherman & Howard.

Under Rich’s leadership, the Qwest Law Department was named the law department of the year in 2008 by Corporate Counsel magazine and one of the Ten Most Innovative Law Departments in 2010 by Inside Counsel magazine.  Rich has been recognized as a Diversity Trailblazer by a joint committee of the Colorado and Denver Bar Associations,  as a Top General Counsel/In House Counsel by Ethisphere magazine and the top legal newsmaker in 2010 by the Denver Business Journal.  Rich was appointed by Colorado Governor Bill Ritter, Jr. as the co-chair of the Information Technology transition team and as chairman of the Colorado Workforce Development Counsel, a position Rich held until 2009.  In addition, Rich serves on the boards of the National Jewish Medical Center, the Colorado Legal Aid Foundation, the Center for Legal Inclusiveness, the Daniels College of Business Executive Advisory Board, the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System, and the Duke Law School Board of Visitors.

Rich holds a bachelor of arts degree from Columbia University in 1979 and a juris doctorate degree from Duke University in 1983.

Rich and his wife, Anne, have two daughters and reside in Littleton, Colorado.

 

Sid Chapon
SVP People & Operations

Sid joined Burnett in 2003 and is member of LBW’s global headquarters team in Chicago. Sid is a leader in a dual role: Director of Leadership & Organizational Development within the LBW People & Culture team and he’s Director of Global Operations. Both roles require him to work in partnership with every agency in the network and with Publicis Groupe.

Sid is responsible for all global leadership & organizational development initiatives. Examples of initiatives that Sid has successfully led include; implementing PeopleSoft HRIS to 25 international agencies, administering the annual People Survey, implementing the agency’s core & leadership competencies, the design & execution of performance appraisals of senior executives, implementing succession planning talent reviews, and being the editor of the Global News section of The Notepad. Sid has been instrumental in activating HumanKind and served as program sponsor/director for Activation Workshops that were delivered in a number of regions. Additionally, he led the design and implementation of new leadership development programs delivered by global headquarters such as the Senior Management Program and the Global Immersion Program. He’s currently leading a new global recruiting & on-boarding initiative and leading the design of a new Mid-Management Program.

In his Operations Director role Sid works alongside LBW Chairman & CEO Tom Bernardin and the Global Leadership Council (GLC) to plan and execute quarterly GLC meetings and responding to monthly and spontaneous Publicis Groupe reporting requirements.

Prior to joining Burnett Sid was a Deloitte Consulting management consultant, a WorldCom training director, and a University of Tulsa Assistant Dean of Admission. He holds a Master Degree in Organizational Development and a Bachelor of Art Degree in Marketing & Organizational Communication.

Sid is married to Lisa and has two children, Caroline & Henry. Originally from Amsterdam, The Netherlands, he enjoys spending time with his family, and being lakeside (running, biking, being on the beach).

 

Angela Cinefro
Vice President of Human Resources, L&D & Talent

Angela Cinefro is the Vice President of Human Resources for HP’s Enterprise Business Leadership & Development and Talent Management.  In this role, Angela is responsible for providing world-class learning solutions as well as identifying, assessing and developing the executive talent required to lead the Enterprise Business organization.  Prior to her current role, Angela was Vice President of Enterprise Business Workforce Planning and Operations where she was responsible for establishing and driving the labor strategy and labor cost forecasting for the Enterprise Business group and was the Director of Business HR for the worldwide Consulting and Integration Business group.

Prior to joining HP in 2006,  Angela spent four years at Knightsbridge Solutions as the  Chief People Officer reporting to the CEO, where she was responsible for enterprise wide human resources, recruiting, learning and development.  Additionally, Angela led recruiting and retention for the Americas at PricewaterhouseCoopers and held global leadership roles at IBM.  Angela’s functional experience includes merger and acquisition leadership, development and implementation of strategic talent initiatives for services businesses including recruitment, learning, performance management, cost of the workforce, payroll, benefits strategy, employee relations, leadership and competency based development frameworks.  Angela has held both global and regional roles and has lead team sizes from 5 to 90+.

Angela was selected to participate in the Executive Council Director Rotation program at HP in 2008 and was the recipient of the IBM Leadership Award in July 2003.

Angela holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Michigan State University.  She currently resides in the Chicago area with her husband and two children. 

 

Sharon Daniels

Ms. Daniels originally joined Kaset International in 1991, and served in the roles of Consultant, VP of Operations and General Manager of Field Operations. In 1997 and 1998 she held a leadership role involved in the integration of the three companies: Learning International, Kaset International and Zenger Miller, which together became AchieveGlobal.

Prior to returning to AchieveGlobal, she served as President and CEO of Communispond, a corporate communications company headquartered in New York. She was introduced to Communispond through her work with Frontline Group, a roll up of eight individual performance improvement companies.

Ms. Daniels’ career prior to her work in the training industry was in the field of banking. She joined Southeast Bank, headquartered in Miami, Florida, after college and held numerous roles in operations, the mergers and acquisitions team, branch management, and training and consulting. She was with Southeast Bank for fifteen years. Ms. Daniels holds a bachelor of education degree from the University of Florida, and a Master’s in Training and Organizational Development from the University of South Florida, and has over twenty-five years of experience in general management and sales leadership roles.

On the personal front, Ms. Daniels is married and has three children. In her spare time she enjoys volunteering in her community as well as hiking.

 

John E. Derry
Senior Vice President Human Resources
Kansas City Southern

John E. Derry is senior vice president human resources for Kansas City Southern, directing the human resources and labor relations functions for The Kansas City Southern Railway Company and advising Kansas City Southern de Mexico, S.A. de C.V. on its human resources and labor relations functions. 

Mr. Derry joined Kansas City Southern from YRCW-Yellow Transportation, where he served as vice president human resources.  He has also held a variety of human resources and operations positions with General Mills, Inc.  He holds a master of science in organizational development from Bowling Green State University and a bachelor of arts in leadership and management from Judson College.  He is also certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources from the Human Resource Certification Institute.

 

Carleen Haas
Vice President Talent Strategies

Carleen Haas is Vice President – Talent Strategies for Humana Inc., a Fortune 73 health solutions company. As a member of the company’s operating committee, Carleen works to drive the execution of the business strategy through cultivation of an enterprise-wide talent mindset. Her leadership of workforce planning, talent acquisition, diversity, onboarding and human capital analytics ensures that the company is uniquely positioned to acquire the right talent at the right time.

Prior to this role, Carleen led Humana’s HR Business Consultancy group interfacing with business leadership on the strategy and execution of all human capital practices. Before joining Humana in 2000, Carleen served in a variety of leadership roles with US Airways, Inc. and in government service to educate and develop service personnel. She currently serves on the board of Project Women whose mission is to assist homeless single mothers obtain a college education. Carleen holds a Bachelor of Science from Bucknell University and an MBA from Sullivan University.


 

Brian Hults
Vice President, Global Organizational and People Development
Newell Rubbermaid

Brian Hults is a former Novartis Pharmaceuticals and Coca-Cola executive with significant experience in global human resources, executive capability building and strategic workforce planning.

Currently, Brian leads Newell Rubbermaid’s Global Organizational and People Development function.  In this role, Brian has a wide variety of responsibilities, from developing the company’s succession plans for the Board of Directors to directing major organizational change initiatives such as the company’s marketing, sales and operational transformation initiatives.  Most recently, Brian is credited with implementing a sales and operations planning initiative that contributed to a $224 million reduction in inventory and a 33 percent increase in cash generation for the company during 2009.

Brian joined Newell Rubbermaid in 2005 as Group Vice President of Human Resources for the company’s Global Office Products segment.  In partnership with the segment President, he led a turnaround of the business that helped achieve nine consecutive quarters of double-digit operating income growth.

Prior to joining Newell, Brian was responsible for the turnaround of corporate human resources, global staffing, labor relations, and HR shared services at Novartis Pharmaceutical in Basel, Switzerland.  He also led the turnaround of human resources for the Coca-Cola Company’s $5 billion business in the Asia-Pacific region.  There, he fostered quality HR practices across the region, implemented a proactive workforce planning model and led HR for the $890 million Korean bottler acquisition.  Brian also led a 33 percent workforce rationalization initiative on-time, ahead of budget while enabling the business to exceed its financial targets that year.

Earlier in his career, Brian was responsible for HR for the $3 billion Global Farm Equipment business at Case Corporation (formerly JI Case).  There, in partnership with the business president, he co-led the development of a new go-to-market approach that resulted in a 27 percent lift in top line sales and 40 percent reduction in fixed cost.  Also at Case, he held a variety of positions of increasing responsibility including Plant HR Manager, Corporate HR Manager and HR Manager for global R&D, while also serving on the team that managed a successful initial public offering exceeding parent company expectations.

Brian began his career with Frito-Lay, Inc. (a PepsiCo division) in Dallas, working in Management and Organizational Development.

He has a B.A. in general psychology from the University of California, San Diego, an M.A. and Ph.D in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Michigan State University and a Master of Management from the Kellogg School of Business at Northwestern University.  Brian lives in Atlanta with his wife of over 20 years and three children. 

 

David Kaput

Mercer and Consultant and International HR Project Manager at All Nippon Airways.  Bilingual and bicultural, a highlight was acting as interpreter for the US Ambassador to Japan, the Honorable Michael Armacost, at the US-Japan Black Ships Festival.

Mr. Kaput earned an MA in International Relations, Business and Management from the International University of Japan, a BA in Political Science from the University of Minnesota and a Diploma in International Studies (Business and Law) from Kansai University of Foreign Languages.  He received a US Congressional appointment to West Point Military Academy from the Honorable Senator Wendell Anderson from Minnesota.

Mr. Kaput has also earned professional certifications, including: SAP Six Sigma Champion, INSEAD-SAP Global Leadership, Chief HR Officer from the National Academy of HR, SHRM Lifetime SPHR and SHRM GPHR.  He was recognized with the Challenge Award from the Japan Management Association and the Outstanding Young Businessman Award from the Masuda Commerce and Industry Association and earned an instructor’s license from the Japan Urasenke Tea Ceremony Association.

Barbara Kennedy

Barbara J. Kennedy has been United Stationers’ Senior Vice President, Human Resources since August 2008.  Ms. Kennedy spent nine years with Swift Transportation Company, Inc. where she most recently was Executive Vice President, Human Resources, Safety, Recruiting and Driver Services.  Her responsibilities included compensation, benefits and all aspects of safety, including strategy development, federal/state compliance, loss prevention and safety education.  Prior to that, Ms. Kennedy was Vice President, Human Resources from 2001-2005.  In that role, she managed all aspects of human resources, including non-driver staffing, compensation and benefits, performance management and served as liaison to the Board of Directors.  From 1999-2001, she was Director, Quality Assurance.  Before joining Swift, Ms. Kennedy spent five-years at Barr-Nunn Transportation, where she held various management positions in human resources.  Ms. Kennedy received her Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

 

Katie Lawler

Katie Lawler, Senior Vice President, Human Resources, GATX Corporation.  Katie joined GATX in May, 2008 and leads the global human resources for the organization.  Prior to joining GATX, Katie held a wide range of positions in operations, human resources and law with Tribune Company in Chicago and New York.  She began her career as an attorney handling labor and employment matters.

Katie holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts and a law degree from the University of Notre Dame.  She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Human Resources Management Association of Chicago.

 

Jon Leatherbury

Jon Leatherbury is currently Vice President, Talent Management and Organizational Development for Fiserv where is responsible for working with executives to profitably grow the business through human capital and business process excellence. Jon acts as business process owner for all executive and leadership development, associate engagement, and performance management globally. He also regularly engages with executives on organizational design and transformation initiatives.

Prior to Fiserv, Jon was Global Director of Leadership Development at Hewitt Associates where he was responsible for the design and delivery of solutions that help build general management capability for Hewitt's global business. While at Hewitt Associates, Jon also served as Director of Human Resources for Hewitt's Midwest operations, as Director of Executive Talent Management and HR Strategy for the HR Outsourcing Segment, and in various other consulting positions.

Jon has significant experience in working with executives to align business and talent strategies—hiring, developing, motivating, and retaining top talent to drive profitable growth. Jon is certified as a Senior Human Resource Professional (through the HR Certification Institute) and as a Six Sigma Black Belt (through the American Society for Quality).

Jon’s work in the area of talent management and organizational development has been highlighted in CLO Magazine, HR Executive Magazine, Quality Progress Magazine, the HR Development Journal, and numerous conference presentations. Jon earned his Master of Science degree in Human Resources from Loyola University's Graduate School of Business, and also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Ripon College.

 

Mindy Mackenzie

Mindy Mackenzie joined Beam Global Spirits & Wine, Inc., as Senior Vice President of Human Resources in January 2010. 

Reporting directly to President & Chief Executive Officer Matthew Shattock, Mackenzie is a member of the company’s executive leadership team. As the global leader of human resources, Mackenzie is responsible for the human resources, organizational development and global communications strategies to support more than 2,500 employees throughout the world. She oversees Beam Global’s employment practices building its talent pipeline, maximizing organizational effectiveness and increasing employee engagement to drive growth in all areas of the business.   

Mackenzie has extensive leadership experience in the areas of human resources, organizational effectiveness, diversity, change management and performance culture development for industry leading retail and consumer packaged goods companies throughout the world. She joined Beam Global following five years at Campbell Soup Co., where she held various positions including Vice President Human Resources & Public Affairs for Campbell’s Asia Pacific division.  

Mackenzie also spent nine years at Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., in the areas of human resources and organizational development and training.  At Wal-Mart, among her many roles and responsibilities, she established a training strategy for the business to accelerate the leadership and development for the company’s associates worldwide.  

Mackenzie holds a bachelor’s degree in theology from Ambassador University, as well as a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from the University of Louisiana at Monroe. She and her family reside in Chicago, Ill. 

 

Andy Maus

Andy Maus recently moved into the Chief Learning Officer role at Sears Holdings where he will be focused on building leadership development, learning technology and Sears Holdings University. He has worked for Sears Holdings for over seven years holding various leadership roles in HR including Director of HR for Corporate Functions and head of HR for Supply Chain. Prior to joining Sears, Andy spent over three years consulting with Fortune 100 organizations on their learning and organizational effectiveness needs. He also served as Adjunct Faculty for Baker College in Michigan. Andy holds a bachelor's and master's in I/O psychology from Western Michigan University. He is currently enrolled in Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management where he is obtaining an MBA.

Kurt Olson

Kurt is a partner at Accenture and is currently Director of Capability Solutions for Accenture. He oversees curricula strategy, planning and development activities for all of Accenture’s 200,000+ employees. Kurt’s passion for the role comes from the ability to directly and positively impact every employee of Accenture and, in turn, to positively impact Accenture’s clients. Although he spent his first ten years directly serving the clients in a consulting role, the majority of his 24-year career with Accenture has been spent working in the learning discipline.

He is an author of the book Return on Learning: Training for High Performance at Accenture and one of the authors of The Learning Advantage. The former book tells the story of why Accenture makes such a significant investment in training and how the organization maximizes the return from this investment. He has a patent pending for the “phenomenal learning” methodology that Accenture developed to support their learning analysis, design, and development process and is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt from Villanova University.

Kurt has BS in computer science, an MBA, and a Ph.D. in Management and Organization Development at Benedictine University. His research interest focuses on the impact of stewardship theory of management, transformational leadership, and employee engagement.

His inspiration comes from his wonderful wife, Shelly, and his two amazing boys, Michael and Connor.

 

Wayne Reschke
Vice President, Human Resources
Alliant Energy

Wayne has been VP HR for Alliant Energy since 2009.  Alliant is a $4B utility with 1.4M customers and 4500 employees across three states.  He is responsible for the all Human Resource functions as well as Strategy, Communication and Safety.

Prior to joining Alliant Energy, Wayne spent 25 years as a consultant, including the last 12 as an owner and founding partner of the Center for Organization Effectiveness, a management consulting firm based in Madison, WI, and its assessment division, surveysbydesign.  In that role, he helped businesses to assess and develop their leaders, manage change initiatives, and improve organizational performance.  He conducted culture assessments, assisted with organizational design and provided one-on-one coaching to executives and managers.  His clients included: Allen-Bradley, Alliant Energy, American Girl, Associated Bank, Briggs & Stratton, Covance, CUNA Mutual Group, General Casualty, Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, HJ Heinz, SC Johnson Wax, Lands’ End, Northwestern Mutual Life, Promega, Publix, Rayovac, St. Marys Hospital, Sonic Foundry, Telephone & Data Systems, US Cellular, and Veridian Homes.

Wayne has held management roles in three consulting firms and positions in human resource development at UW-Madison and as a training director and general faculty at the University of Virginia.  He has also taught at the UW-Madison School of Business and the Fluno Center for Executive Education.  He has a M.Ed. from the University of Virginia and a BA from Northwestern University.  In addition, he has completed 27 hours of post-masters study in Industrial Relations at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. 

 

Andrew P. Slentz
Senior Vice President, Global Human Resources
Peabody Energy Corp.

Andrew Slentz, Senior Vice President of Global Human Resources for Peabody Energy, joined the company in June of 2010.  Andrew has held senior human resource positions in the natural resources and telecommunications industries with responsibilities in North America, Europe and Australasia aligning the Human Capital agenda to the overall Business Strategy.

Prior to Peabody, Andrew was the Senior Vice President of Human Resources for the People & Organization Support at Rio Tinto, Head of HR for Drummond Company and Vice President HR Commercial Development and Shared Service for BHPBillition. He has over 20 years of experience in international human resource issues including merger/acquisitions/divestments, organizational effectiveness & development, change management and compensation.  

Andrew holds an undergraduate degree from Hamilton College and a Masters Degree in Industrial and Labour Relations from Cornell University.  He is originally from upstate New York and currently resides in St. Louis, Missouri with his wife Danielle and their four children. 

 

Caroline Stockdale
Senior Vice President Human Resources
Medtronic, Inc.

Caroline Stockdale joined Medtronic as Senior Vice President of Human Resources in April 2010. In her role, Caroline has responsibility for Medtronic’s worldwide human resources activities including: global talent initiatives, leadership development, diversity and inclusion, and compensation and benefits oversight.

Prior to joining Medtronic, Caroline served as Vice President of Revenue Cycle Operations at Accretive Health, the world’s largest privately-held revenue cycle service provider for large hospitals. She previously served as a senior human resources executive in the United States and Europe at several major corporations including Warner Music Group where she was Executive Vice President of Global Human Resources and managed Six Sigma Operations; American Express Financial Advisors (now Ameriprise) where she was the human resource leader for the Financial Services arm of American Express; and GE Capital Corporation where she held a variety of human resource leadership positions rising to the level of Executive Vice President and Global Human Resources Leader at GE Capital Corporation’s Aviation Services division, an aircraft financing business operating in more than 65 countries.

Caroline received a bachelor’s of arts degree with honors from the University of Sheffield, Sheffield, England, with an emphasis in political theory, French and linguistics. She is a qualified U.K. chartered accountant (ACA), and a Six Sigma Black Belt.  

 

Steve Toomey
Senior Vice President
BTS USA Inc.

Mr. Toomey serves as Senior Vice President for BTS USA, Inc.  His principle responsibilities include engagement generation, conceptualization and implementation, as well operational responsibilities for BTS USA’s Midwest activities.  Additionally, Mr. Toomey's account responsibilities have included managing client relationships in the biotech, energy, finance, professional services, consumer goods, and high technology sectors (principally telecommunication, semiconductor, software and computer industries).   

Specific client relationship responsibilities included managing the Accenture, Adobe, Applied Materials, Autodesk, Cisco Systems, DHL, Medtronic, Microsoft, Nortel Networks, Genentech, SBC Communications, Sun Microsystems, and Washington Mutual accounts.

Prior to BTS, Mr. Toomey was an investment banker at Bankers Trust in the high yield debt markets.  Prior to receiving his MBA in Finance from New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business, Mr. Toomey worked as an Account Executive in the hospitality and computer industries, and built and operated a wholesale clothing business.

 

Steve Walker
AVP Organizational Development
State Farm Insurance

Steven C. Walker , CPCU, is assistant vice president - Learning and Development at State Farm® Corporate Headquarters in Bloomington, Ill.

Walker began his State Farm career in 1986 in the Auto Claims Department in St. Louis, Missouri, as an auto claims representative.  He joined the Personnel Administrative Department in Columbia, Missouri 1988 as a Regional Operations Training Administrator III and, after several promotions, returned to St. Louis as personnel representative I in 1990. In 1992 he was named assistant regional personnel manager in Charlottesville, Virginia.

In 1993 Walker returned to Columbia as a human relations manager in HR Administrations (Human Resources) until 1999. That same year he came to Bloomington, Illinois, as manager - HR Education & Development in Learning and Development. Walker was promoted to director in 2002 and assumed his current position as assistant vice president in 2006.

Walker received a bachelor’s degree from University of Missouri - Columbia in Journalism and was a reporter with Time, Inc. in 1985. He earned the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation in 1998. Walker has been a member of the American Society for Training and Development since 1999.

Walker and his wife Teresa have two children Ben and Ellie.
