Keynote Presentation: "City of Big Data"

Cities are almost incomparable to industry. Each city manages dozens of industries, providing everything from public safety, health services, to building new infrastructure and regulating new and old industries. These activities produce a lot of data. But how does a city use this data to drive its own operations? Using sophisticated data warehousing techniques, leveraging predictive analytics, and embracing the use of and production of open source technology, the city of Chicago has used data to improve efficiency of operations and quality of life for residents.

Tom Schenk is responsible for redesigning the cities open data portal making over 1,000 raw data sets available to the general public. This allows researchers, technologists and average citizens to access some of the cities big data in order to conduct any analysis of their choosing. Prior to occupying the Chief Data Officer position Tom was the Director of Analytics and Performance Management for the City of Chicago and prior to that he was a Research Analyst at Northwestern University.

Many corporations aspire to be innovative.  Too often they are held back by limitations of their own making.  In the keynote, Kevin Boyd will talk about how organizations can create an environment that supports and encourages innovation.  Boyd is the CIO at the University of Chicago Booth School Of Business.  He works as a coach and judge with many young entrepreneurs in Booth’s New Venture Challenge entrepreneurship competitions.  He’ll talk about some of the barriers to innovation that exist in organizations and what can be done to remove them.

Kevin is responsible for the technology at Chicago Booth’s campuses in Chicago, London, Singapore and Hong Kong. Prior to coming to Booth, he was the Vice President of Product Management for Tribune Company. Kevin previously served first as a PMO Director and then as Director of Quality Assurance and Testing for CNA Financial in Chicago. When people talk about a “digital transformation”, they typically focus on a few parts of the process – and a lot of the cool technology.
