“Strategy Dominates Tactics: A Top-Down Macroeconomic Approach”
Session Description:
A Fundamentally Changed Investment Environment: The secular bull market of 1982 to 2007 was fueled by generally declining interest rates and increasing financial leverage. In this era, flexible, top-down investment approaches lost favor. It was easier for fund sponsors to adopt rigid, stylized approaches and simply ride the bull market to success.
In this session, broad vision and flexibility will be discussed, as these are the keys to outperforming over time and under different market conditions. This approach assesses prevailing business and economic conditions, then determines what areas, sectors and securities are best positioned to benefit.

“Innovations in Equity Strategies: The Next Stage in the Beta/Alpha Evolution and Debate”
Session Description:
Equity allocations carry beta (and alpha) risk with the expectation of long-term returns that warrant their prominent place in institutional portfolios. Recently risk has been the headline, but focus is turning again to the appropriate mix of beta and alpha in equity holdings, liquidity characteristics, portfolio construction (130/30 vs. long-only), and approaches to stock selection (quantitative vs. fundamental). Topics addressed include the current landscape for quantitative equity factors and strategies, the evolution of alpha as distinct from beta factors, tradeoffs in using indexed approaches to active investing compared to active mandates, and the role of indexed strategies that contain “structured alpha” as the new benchmarks for active equity allocations.
