  • 9:05am - 9:45am Keynote Presentation: "Next Generation Lawyering - Being an Effective Modern In-House Lawyer"

The fast moving modern enterprise demands that its lawyers go beyond their traditional role of managing risk – and become fully engaged in driving the business. What makes an in-house lawyer effective in this evolving environment?

Lawyers may not be in the room when business decisions are made. Why? Business leaders are concerned that risk averse lawyers will focus on the risk, block progress and slow things down. There is a perception in business that traditional lawyers are so focused on the legal aspects of a project that they miss the business drivers.

Modern in-house lawyers must be in the room and make a valuable contribution to the decision making process. Embracing a new way of thinking about risk and the role that legal plays opens doors and allows lawyers to make a real difference.

eBay’s Legal Team has been on this journey of embracing a new way of thinking about risk and owning our seat at the decision making table for over a decade – as the business has broken legal ground – and grown from a Silicon Valley startup to a global ecommerce power-house.   David will share his insights into partnering with the eBay business.
