Cities are almost incomparable to industry. Each city manages dozens of industries, providing everything from public safety, health services, to building new infrastructure and regulating new and old industries. These activities produce a lot of data. But how does a city use this data to drive its own operations? Using sophisticated data warehousing techniques, leveraging predictive analytics, and embracing the use of and production of open source technology, the city of Chicago has used data to improve efficiency of operations and quality of life for residents.

Tom Schenk is responsible for redesigning the cities open data portal making over 1,000 raw data sets available to the general public. This allows researchers, technologists and average citizens to access some of the cities big data in order to conduct any analysis of their choosing. Prior to occupying the Chief Data Officer position Tom was the Director of Analytics and Performance Management for the City of Chicago and prior to that he was a Research Analyst at Northwestern University.
