In a sea of mobile apps, drones and Blockchain, much emphasis over the last decade has been rightly placed on consumer-facing, wholly digitalized projects delivered in small chunks using increasingly Agile-oriented methodologies.  All good.  However, with research showing that in 2017 more than 53% percent of all technology projects still utilize traditional waterfall methodologies for delivery, and with many so-called Agile efforts really just pale hybrids, how do we truly innovate for larger-scale core system or transformation projects and programs that need to stick closer to waterfall?  What approaches will concretely address the common failure points in larger projects, often centering around schedules, third-party vendor failures, quality, and scope management.  Importation of Agile and Incremental approaches for daily management techniques are a common answer, but Tokio Marine has taken the thinking further, with specific approaches which consider also how we align partners and business users continuously, how we blend scheduling factors to include multi-factor considerations from business cycles to depreciation, how we use pilots and proofs-of-concept within projects, and how we create incremental requirements-gathering and development patterns within a non-Agile context.
