Thought Leadership Spotlight Presented by Druva: Protect and Govern Data at the Edge: Lessons from the Front Lines: Jeff McAllister, Regional Vice President – Eastern Region, Druva

Jeff McAllister, Druva’s Regional Vice President – Eastern Region, discussed the consumerization of IT and the importance of bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies for organizations during a Thought Leadership Spotlight Presented by Druva at the 2014 Chief Information Officer Leadership Forum in New York on Dec. 10. In his presentation, “Protect and Govern Data at the Edge: Lessons from the Front Lines,” McAllister noted the constitution of data is changing, and today’s organizations need to adapt to stay ahead of their rivals.

The number of remote offices is increasing worldwide, McAllister said, which is creating new IT problems. In addition, more data is becoming available to organizations, and McAllister pointed out that organizations need to find ways to manage this information outside of their firewalls: “I don’t necessarily have the IT reach, I don’t have the geographic representation in those [remote] offices, often meaning that sometimes when those systems go down due to a lack of resource, bandwidth to those sites because it’s so expensive, sometimes I can literally have sites out of touch and out of commission for 24 or 48 hours, which has a dramatic impact on the business.”

McAllister also said productivity is key for organizations, but these organizations must find ways to enable employees to work remotely without putting critical data at risk. Organizations need to deliver the same level of responsiveness both inside and outside of their firewalls, McAllister added, to succeed in today’s global marketplace: “How do I provide the same levels of security, responsiveness, restore capability, reigniting those users in an area where bandwidth is limited? [Organizations] look for a solution to try to make sure that they had a way to protect their data and then really come up with that unified governance strategy.”
